UVM Bookstore's Textbook Advantage
As a student, we realize that you now have more options than ever before for buying textbooks and course materials.  We also believe that the UVM Bookstore is the best possible shopping choice for you, because it provides the following benefits:

  1. A knowledgeable staff who is familiar with the campus, knows your faculty, and has worked in cooperation with them to acquire the appropriate materials.
  2. A staff willing to go beyond normal customer service duties in assisting students and parents in the transition to college life.
  3. Student-friendly return policies in case a student drops a class or has a schedule change, with no need to pay for shipping these returned books across the country.
  4. Systems in place to accept campus-specific payments methods such as scholarship funds and financial aid specifically for that student at this school.  The ability to accept credit cards, campus-wide debit accounts, and personal checks.
  5. Making used books available is the single most significant way that your bookstore is reducing the cost of textbooks to students.
  6. Buyback services enable students to get extra money at the end of he semester for books they no longer need or want.
  7. A textbook reservation system that enables student customers to have first choice of quality used books, before they are sold out.

Other factors to consider before making you final textbook purchase:

Is the book being sold somewhere else the same edition that is being used in class?  It is possible that some textbooks being sold online and at other stores are old editions. Having the appropriate edition of a textbook is much more important than a general reading book.
Will the book arrive in time to be useful in class?  Often with online booksellers, the book will ship anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks from the date of the order.  This timing would almost always be unacceptable to students at the start of classes.

Vermont State Sales Tax on Textbooks
In order to comply with a change in State of Vermont Tax Regulation 233-2, the UVM Bookstore, which is owned and operated by the University of Vermont , as an instrumentality of the state, is now REQUIRED to charge Vermont state sales tax on the sale of all textbooks, general reading books, medical books and computer software. This change went into effect starting February 7, 2005.

Textbook Reservations and Web Orders
The UVM Bookstore provides textbooks for not only UVM classes, but for the Community College of Vermont (CCV) classes located in Burlington and for Burlington College.  The online ordering system is open for UVM students usually 2 weeks before classes begin.  After classes start, we cannot guarantee which textbooks will be available; which will be sold out vs. those which have not yet arrived.  Just stop by the store to check for those books you still need.  CCV classes start later than UVM and most CCV students are not near campus so their textbooks are available online for a longer period of time. Burlington College students may order online or stop by to peruse the textbooks required for Burlington College classes.

What is a Textbook Reservation?
When you place an order for textbooks online with us, it means you are purchasing those textbooks at that time.  We pull the books from the shelves, charge your credit card, and hold them for you to pick up.  We don't like long lines either.  This is why we require payment of your order at this time.  New books may be substituted for used, and used for new based on availability.  You will be charged accordingly.  Textbooks are taxable items in Vermont so, if you choose to pick up your textbook order at the Bookstore, you will be charged Vermont State Sales Tax.  There is no state sales tax added to orders shipped out of Vermont. Your order will be processed through checkout so when you pick up your order, all you need to do is verify your order and go.

  • Payment information must be completed in full at time of ordering.
  • Your account will be charged after your books are pulled from the shelves. The amount charged may be different from your order based on substitutions and availability.  Please note that all books are on a first-come, first-served basis.  We will make every attempt to fill your order exactly as it was requested; however, if you place an order for used books and they are out of stock when your order is actually filled, we will substitute new books.  If you order a new book and only used are available, we will substitute used books. Your bill will be adjusted accordingly.  All textbook prices are estimated, and subject to change.  Textbooks are taxable items in Vermont so, if you choose to pick up your textbook order at the Bookstore, you will be charged Vermont State Sales Tax.  There is no state sales tax added to orders shipped out of Vermont.
  • Please be aware of our textbook return policy.  For Fall and Spring semesters you have 7 business days from the date of purchase up until the end of add/drop. Those dates are posted in the store and on your receipt.  There is a 2 business day return policy on summer semester textbooks.
  • SAVE YOUR RECEIPT/PACKING LIST - No returns, refunds or exchanges without current receipt/packing list - NO EXCEPTIONS!

Buyback
The UVM Bookstore buys back textbooks mostly every day (call first to verify) all year round but, the best time to sell your books is during buyback.  This is when the bookstore has orders from the professors regarding which books are being used here, at UVM, for the following semester.  If they are being used here, the bookstore will pay 50% of the new price, even if you originally bought the book used, as long as it is in resalable condition.  Many books now include a CD or other inserts.  It is a good idea to bring the inserts with the books to buyback because the value may be significantly lower without these inserts.  If the bookstore doesn't have an order from the professors, then a used book wholesaler buys the books to be used at other colleges and universities throughout the country.  This are valued at up to 1/3 of the new textbook price and are based on national supply and demand.  Recycling your textbooks is good for the environment and lowers the price of textbooks for everyone.  Custom published books are not eligible for buyback.  You do not need your sales receipt to sell your books.
